Knoxville Police Offer Security Tips to Last-Minute Shoppers

The next few days will be a shopping frenzy for those who have waited until the last minute to get Christmas gifts; but Knoxville Police Chief Dan Losada cautions shoppers to take care while they’re at the stores, and protect their gifts from potential thieves.

Losada tells KNIA/KRLS News it’s easy to get distracted and forget to lock a car door or leave an item unattended; he notes there are two main areas which police are concerned about for shoppers.

“Number one, if you’ve put things in your cars and you’ve left them out in the open; if you’re going to buy something and then go to another store, make sure you’ve concealed the item — throw a blanket over it, put it in your trunk or disguise it somehow,” Losada says.

“The second thing we have to hear about is people who, especially women, leave their purses in the shopping carts. And they’ll…step away a moment to get something off the shelf, leaving their shopping cart unattended and their purse unattended. And it’s a great opportunity for somebody to take the purse, or go into the purse and get something valuable out of the purse.”
