Pella’s girls lost a last-second 56-54 decision last night at Ballard, while the Little Dutch boys used a second half surge to win 60-53 in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
Trailing 27-20 at intermission, Pella’s Logan Shetterly scored 19 of his game high 30 points in the third quarter as the Little Dutch built a seven point lead of their own. It ballooned to 14 by the fourth, and Pella held off a late Bomber charge for the victory.
Coach Derek Schulte says that the comeback started on the defensive end.
“We were able to create deflections, and that’s something we chart. As far as defelections, steals, blocks and charges, we had 22 of those in the final three quarters. Logan had a bunch of those, Grant (Nelson) was someone who stepped in and drew multiple charges. And then our ability for Logan and others to finish at the rim. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say that Logan’s third-quarter wasn’t just a huge momentum shift which allowed us to get into a rhythm that we struggled to get into in the first half.”
The win moves the Little Dutch to 2-1 on the season.
In the opener, Pella’s girls committed 32 turnovers as they fell behind by 11 points in the second half. They thought they still trailed by one, 54-53, when Madison Parks went to the line for a one-and-one with 1.5 seconds remaining. She missed the front end, and the Lady Dutch fouled, giving Ballard two free throws with 0.3 seconds remaining. The Bombers made both shots, giving them an apparent 56-53 victory. After the game, it was noted that scorekeepers incorrectly took a point off the board for Pella at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and the final score was officially 56-54, meaning Pella’s last foul, and Ballard’s winning points, came when the game was actually tied at 54.
Emily Holterhaus led Pella with 11 points and 20 rebounds, while Madison Naig chipped in 10 points and six boards.
The Lady Dutch fall to 1-3 on the season and will join the boys for a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader at home Friday night against Indianola.
